A tidal wave and hurricane swept over the Svciety Istands on the 13th of January, and one thousand of the natives perished. Eighty islands were 10th February, Eight white men were drowned by the recent tidal wave, Three men-of-war, two of them being French and one Italian, have left Papeite (the en pital of Tal Island) to render assistance.—Reuter.
The Society Islands, in the Western Pacific, are French dependencies. The most important are Tahiti, with a population of 10,750, and Moorea, with a population of 1,596.—Ev.
