An interesting reference is made in the memorial to the professors. It is stated that hitherto in the schools started the instructors have been either " priests" who have come to China to preach, of officials who have been dismissed from the Customs' service, men without special qualifications and unable to produce results. Now it is the intention of the Memorialist to send deputies to Japan, America and Europe, to select men who are specialists, The Insulted. ionaries—I_ don't. know of any priests—must hang their heads in shame. Why could they have been so deceived as to enter om extucational work under the Govermnent, and stand the chance of being contemned by the flint Minister of Education? Just notice some of these men without learning: Dr. Martin, formerly of the Peking Tung Wen Kuan and the Imperial University; Dr. Fryer, of the Shanghai Arsenal and Polytechnic; Mr.
Shansi College; Dr. Tenney, of the Tientsin Unive sity; Dr Watson Hayes, of the evllege in Chitiani Dr. Robert Coltman, Mr. F. Huberty James, Mr. Allardyce Mo the Cniversity in Peking; Mr. G. Reid, of the Internation; Institute ud finally, Dr. Sheffield, who is invited to Viceroy Yuan's Collese at Pav-ting-fu. The Customs men lent to. the Tung Wen Kuan are equally incapables."" The Special Spite sh-awn against men who have had, er continue to have, connec ion, with Missions is no doubt due to the demand wf the late University faculty for full pay up to date.
