Si,—For the benefit of the public at large it may be stated that when the idea of the Martyrs' Memorial was first proposed, there were two views held.
One that a large Memorial Hall worthy of Christendom and worthy of the chief centre of commerce in the Empire be put up in Shanghai, for the purpose of furthering the object of the Martyrs by giving it for the free use of all who promoted the interests of all missions alike, such as the Bible, Tract and Book Societies, and for the free use of all the Missionary Socie holding general meetings and Conferences for the advanc-ment of the Kingdom of God in China, etc., just as the Memorial Hall was put up' in Madras after the Tudian Mutiny.
The other idea was that no building was necessary, only some monument on thy Bund, etc. But the first idea was carried bya very large majority. suggestion to instead of mere!
any one has any constructive prticl destructive criticism, and will write to the secretary of the Martyrs' Memorial Committee, Iam sure it will have their most careful attention.
