The Passing of Home Rule

of the Home Rule Bill

There was very little excitement in the House of Lords on Friday when that measure and the Welsh Disestablishment Bill received the Royal Assent by commission. The} Unionist peers kept away rather than be present at this consummation of the blow which has bern struck at the power of their order. Even in Ireland there were no great popular ji though of course the Nationalist journals indulged in praus of delight, dwelling naturally upon Mr. John Redmond's effective point that the passing of the Home Rule Bill marks also the triumph of democracy over feudalism in that it is one of the first three measures ever passed without the consent of the House of Lords. But much water—and unhappily much blood too—has to run before the Irish Parliament comes into being.
