The demand of current for industrial purposes is also on the increase. Hundreds of small motors are in use, and in the most unex. pected places one may come acre a small native workshop having its plant driven by electricity. The consumer simply pays for the current, and a monthly rental for the motor, the Municipal Electricity Department undertaking to keep the motor in going order. The motors are in use in engineering shops and printing works, and there is scarcely @ rice mill in Shanghai without one. Many of the cotton mills, foreign, Chinese, and Japanese have large motor installations, and five large flour mills, various engineering shops, and shipbuilding works are also being supplied.
So, far, the demand for current does not seem to have been affected by slackness of trade following upon the war.
