London via Bombay, 5th May.
At the Royal Academy banquet Land Selborne, the First Lord of the Admiralty, in responding to the toast of the 'y, said that the Transport Department had conveyed to South Aftica half a million of men, a million and a quarter tons of stores, exclusive of forage, and four hundred thousand horses and mules To do this they had employed nearly six hundred British ships. This unrivalled feat was due to the work of the splendid British mercantile marine, the continued enjoyment and possession whereof was indispensable to the prosperity, and even the existence, of the country.—Reuter.
