Sin,—In the conflict on the subject of the proper orthography to be used when writing the name of the capital of Chi the advocates of the form ' Pekin" have not a leg to stand on. The ''g" is not absent in the Cantonese or in avy other dialect. I believe it to be beyond doubt that the spelling "Pekin" was simply an imitation of the French mode of writing the word, which continues to be "Pekin to this day.
