REPORTS OF A GEPMAN VICTORY IN POLAND

CONTRADICTORY ACCOUNT FROM RUSSIA — London, Deo. 17

Berlin is beflagged, the bells are ringing, and the papers are commenting extravagantly on what they describe as the most decisive victory in the history of the world. This is the result of an Austrian and German official announcement that the Russian armies everywhere are retreating, and are being pursued in Poland, after desperate fighting.

This ie not confirmed by the Russian official communique issued this evening which says: "We are vigorously pursuing the defeated German forces on the Mlawa front; the bulk of the enemy's forces have re-crossed the East Prussian frontier. We have captured prisoners, guns and war material.

"There was no fighting of importance yesterday on the left bank of the Vistula or in western Galicia, The garrison of Preemys! made many sorties last week, all of which were repulsed with heavy loss to the enemy."
