A no less successful bal fought on October 15 at No seven miles from Warsaw. Here the Germans tried a plan of which they are very fond. They sent their infantry into one of the great forests and then followed with their artillery which began a violent artillery attack on the Russian positions. An artillery duel followed. A German aeroplane an-neared over the Russian positions but was greeted with such showers of shrapnel and bullets that it speedily retired. At the same time the Russians began a general advance and by evening they had taken the German trenches and driven back the enemy several miles.
Here, as elsewhere, the Germans were very confident of victory. Officers had questioned the local Polish gentry as to the best hotels in Warsaw, since they were certain, they said, to be in that city within three days and wanted a decent place wherein they might put up and have a bath. On the eve of the battle, indeed, one of these officers felt so easy in his mind on the score of the Russians that be was leisurely bathing in " Polish house when a Cossack unexpectedly arrived and took charge of him.
