There is not quite the same intense interest in the race for the America Cup that there was on the occasions of Sit Thomas Lipton's first and second attempts to bring it home; but all the same the interest was very great. The abortive result of yesterday's race was signalled to thousands of people in London and the provinces by means of coloured fireworks and other devices arranged by amusement caterers, hotel-keepers, and others; and the evening papers announcing somewhat sabiguously, " Cup Race—Result," must have had an enormous sale. -Before this reaches you the result of the whole contest will long have been known all over the world; but here at present we know nothing, but that inthe first attempt at a race the defender drifted a mile or more further than the challenger. It is pointed out that two years" ago Shamrock had a decided advantage in both the unfinished races, and yet could not win a single race; and we are urged to take comfort from the reflection that the same thing may hold good of Reliance this year. On the other hand, in_ the opinion of nearly all the experts it is precisely in very light breezes that Shamrock IN should have the advantage. On the whole we are not quite so sanguine as were. In the trials Shamrock ILL nly proved herself to be consider ly faster than Shamrock I; but Re-nice also proved distinctly superior to institution. "On form," therefore, it is pretty el it Reliance ought to retain the contended, however, It Shamrock 1 is a much faster yacht han. she was when she met jon in the races of 1899, while Constitution is neither better nor worse than she then was. If that is so, we have a chance of success; if not, Sir as will once more return defeated. He tells us with pride that every mem-her of Shamrock III's crew is confident of victory; but as the crews of Sham-ud IT were equally confident we gather much comfort: from that.
