An Epidemic of Fire

There was a big fire on the night of the ith September in the city of Amoy. The wind was blowing pretty stiff at that time. It is reported that only 1 death conned and about 34 houses were burnt down.

Another fire occurred at about 2.30 p-m-. on the 3rd October behind Messrs. Jardine, Mathesons and Co.'s premises in a Chinese kerosene oil shop. Luckily there was no wind at the time and the blaze was extinguished by 5 p.m. Had there been any wind there would have been another calamity, and the whole of the buildings of the British Concession on the Bund had a narrow escape. It is curious to relate that last year about ne date a big fire occurred in the same ality.

On the same night at about 11 o'clock ther fire took place at the old Protes-Missionary Foundling House near the Amoy Dock. The wind was blowing very strong at that time and the whole of the Founding house was burnt down, leaving only bare walls, also several Chinese houses and shanties were destroyed by that fir The new Amoy Dock and the Roman Catholic Church, both had narrow escapes. The fire was commencing to burn the windows of the Roman Catholic Convent, but through—the great efforts of the inmates, and of the chileers and sailors of an American steamer, and of some foreign residents the fire was prevented from spreading any further. It was a great disappointment to the Spanish sisters and the. priests as the church was nicely decorated for the Feast of the Holy Rosary ko place next day. Ail the lamps, chandeliers, and sororal articles from the church de yard, ready about 4 a.m. is in full swing, several steamers with Chinese coolies having left for Manila and the Straits Settlements.
