The Japanese Crisis

Osaka, June 26.

It is announced to-day that the leading steel and copper interests, including the finns of Mitsui, Mitsubishi, Okura, Furukawa, Sumitomo, Fujita and Kuhara, have secured Government assistance, amounting to nearly Y. 20,000,000. It is stated that this assistance was sought because, otherwise, work would have had to be curtailed, which would have entailed a large increase of unemployment.

Recent statistics show that the total number of working men and women in Osaka at the end of last year was nearly a quarter of a million and it is estimated that 5,000 are at present unemployed.

The prices of commodities are about the same as last June, though they are % to 30 per cent. below their highest level.—Reuter.
