Several months ago the Legislative Council of the Federated Malay Straits passed a law requiring the registration of all schools. The Chinese educational authorities of the place at first received the impression that it was a movement to bar the teaching of the Chinese language and classics in the Ohinese schools there so they registered a protest. Their minds were soon set at rest when the real situation was explained, but it seems that shortly afterwards another misapprehension arose for the Chinese asserted that the new law was in-in Singapore and other places
tended to interfere with the freedom of ithe Chinese educational authorities.
Telegrams were gent to the Min-istness of Education and Foreign Affairs in Peking by the overseas Chinese requesting that steps be taken to have the law annulled.
The Chinese press on Thursday reported that the Minister of Foreign Affairs had approached H. M. Minister regarding the matter and after some consultation requested that the British Minister should communicate with the proper authorities with a view to cancelling the new law which was considered to be detrimental to Chinese interests.
