A Dispirited Message

London vit Bombay, ith August.

General Kuropatkin says in his dispatch that he hopes the troops, having retreated to their main position after heavy losses, will be able to maintain it against an enemy numerically superior.

The Russian General reports that his troops withdrew from Haichéng unmolested, by the Anshanchang Road (the highroad from Newchwang to Liaoyang). Though carts were provided to carry their coats and kit, the troops suffered from the terrible heat, and there were a considerable number of cases of sunstroke.—Reuter.
