HALF-HEARTED HONOUR TO KUEICHOW DEAD

Kueiyang, Kuei., Dea 18

As soon as the weather cleared after the heavy fall of snow, morial celebrations were held in honour of those who had fallen in battle in the interests of Kueichow within the last two years. On tha first day there was a tremendous procession, headed by the soldiers. After the passing of the soldiers, there were a number of paper images supposed to be historical personages such as Liu Pei and other worthies. Then came children dressed ju gorgeous apparel and fixed on stands in such a way that the ordinary individual would think they were standing en one foot all the time, ang performing a wonderful feat in the art of maintaining their balance.

On the second day, the students from the different schools were marched to the temple to do bom-age before the tablets. The relatives and close friends of the deceased personages went on the third day and prostrated themselves before the tablets. Each night there was a display of fireworks in the temple grounds, and crowds of men, women and children congregated there to watch the proceedings, Listening to the comments and criticisms of those qualified to express an opinion, one received the impression that many think the money might have been devoted to a better purpose. Some of those who gave their time to help in the arranging of the procession, ete, did so because the authorities requested them to do so, and not "from the love of the thing."
