The Death of Mr

COLTMAN — Another View of the Case

The article written by Mr. Rodney Gilbert. and_ published in the "North-China -Daily News' appears to give fairly and fully. the facts of the case regarding the unfortunate death of Mr. Charles LI. Coltman. Mr. Gilbert marshals his facts with the skill of the. experienced journalist, but it does not necessarily follow that his deductions must po accepted as correct. The writer has carefully studied Mr. Gilbert's article and has not arrived at exactly the same conclusions. It is admitted that in some ways Mr. Gilbert was in a singularly favourable position to form a fair judgment, as he had the advantage of making personal investigations on the spot and of being, no doubt, personally acquainted with some of the principal participants in this tragic occurrence. On the other hand, something must be allowed for national bias, and it is possible that a person, like the writer, who knows none of the parties and is neither an American nor a Chinese, may be still more advantageously situated to analyse critically and unemotionally such evidence as has been placed before the public by Mr, Gilbert himself.
