We understand that Mr. Chang Meiyi, Assistant Director of the well-known.
.perial Nanyang College, at Sicawei, has issued a notice to the scholars now enjoying their New Year's vacation, that as. B, Shdog Kung-pao has turned over the administration of the "College to the: Shangpu, or Ministry of Commerce, students are requested not to return to their classes upon the close. of their holidays until further notice. appears that it hasbeen decided to change "the designation of the College into that of Commercial College of the First; or Premier, Class, and that the delay in ro-opening classes of the red tapeism which requires the Shangpu to nietiiorialise the Throne that that Ministry lits taken over charge of Institution and suggesting the auspicious date for the re-opening of the College for the reception of students. It may seem anomalous that a large and flourishing institution like the Imperial Napyang College should: be taken charge of by a Ministry of Commerce, but we understand this is because that College has hitherto: been:-mainly supported by re-"annual grants from the China Merchants' 8. N. €o.; and the Chinese Telegraph "Administration, the direction of which"'has also been handed over by ELE, Shing Kung-pao to the Ministry of Commerce. It is a pity that just as the College is progressing rapidly forward to the front rank of institu-tious "of learning in China there should] be, as it were, & check in its fortunes, and none, we feel certain, could regret this mote' than the Chinese youths who have been receiving literary nourishment. within the walls of their Alma Mater. It is, -howover, +to; be sincerely hoped -that the Shangpu. wilt not seck.to change the curriculum of the College;-whioh has -peomised 20: well and: has lately seas-gouths.to the United States, where they passed amongst the highest of those who were seeking #d-mission' into some of the largest "Universities.
