He Panama Affair

Paoama was reached on January 6 yence the vessels set sail on the 12th. The welcome accorded to the crew by the Americans was of the most sincere ad friendly nate, The American military officer who is the president of the Panama Constraction Committee was obliging enough to show all the cadets ind the Cans! works io most unreserved manner. It took fall two days for the cadets to finish their inspection of the entire works. The kindness shown to the Japanese during their sojourn was really remarkable in many ways. Somehow " ridiculous ramour was floated to the effect that I indulged in severe criticism of the canal works in progress. Tt was even alleged that I was amazed at the colossal magnitude of the scale on which the works wore pushed oe and that I explicitly declared myself opposed to Mr, Taft's policy, also that I would be dismissed from' my post for this irresponsible statement of mine, Sach allegations, from whatever sources they ave emanated, are too ludicrous even to be related. They must be the result of freaks of imagination on the part of sensation-mongers. Occupying a post of importance and responsibility bbe impossible for me to say anything of the sort either in my official or private capacity."
