The scandals no doubt had their effect upon the by-election which has jus tak: place in East Finsbury, for the sei vacated by the death of Mr. Richards, K.C. The Liberal has been returned by nearly 800—by far the largest majority by either side in this constituency. The figures do not sound so startling as in some recent elections, but they mean that in a constituency which has usually returned Conservatives, the proportion of Liberale—or those voting Liberal—to Conservatives is now three to two. The only plea that can be offered in ox-Janation by the losers is that Mr.
hen, the Unionist candidate, was a jected to great deal of rowdyism at his meetings, and frequently failed to. obtain a bearing. Rowdyism of this kind, however, is apt to recoil on the party for babu that the Liberal majority which it is perpetrated, and the. proity would have been at least as large if Mr. Cohen had always been allowed to speak.
