Taxes and Riots

News has reached here of riots at Puchoufu, in Southern Shansi, not far from the Yellow River. Some thousands of people from the country side are said to ye entered the city, proceeded to the official treasury, and pulled it down. The mandarin and his wife had to flee for lives. Fire was opened from two sides on the rioters, who, however, could not be dispersed till they had destroyed the yamen. The trouble is said to have arisen from a tax on brandy which the people considered too heavy. I have not heard that any damage was dono to the mission station.
