Jewellery and Ornaments

The excavators have also come across an extraordinarily varied collection of jewellery and other ornaments, pottery, and fragments of marble and bronze statuary. Among the most interesting fragments are the arm and shoulder of a statue of one of the Roman em-perers. These are of bronze, covered with gold.

"As the remaining parts of the statue have not yet come to light seems likely," said Mr. Bryce, "that it and others of special value were smashed up for the sake of the gold by the Saxons when they sacked the place."
