Copyright in China

To the Editor of the "Norta-Caisa Dairy News."

Srr,—Your reference to vho Copyright question in China reminds me that, some three or four years ago, while looking through the educational works issued Ly the same great Chinese publishing house you mention, I came across a complete reprint of one of Peter Parley's geographies, dated 1812, I think. This was no case of fringement of copyright, but what amused me and set me. reflecting was that, on looking up the chap-for dealing with China, I found, among other flagrant inaccuracies, this picturesque account of the Chinese: "they wear long gowns, with a silk sash round the waist. into which are stuck a pair of chopsticks and a murderous-looking knife." And this book was intended for the education of the Chinese young!

Bince then, I believe, obsolete works such as the above are 10 more reprinted. I have not seen any nor have I been able to procure a copy of this interesting literary curiosity.

I am, ete., Shanghai, Dec. 8.
