Notes from Hangchow

Hangchow, Dec. 9.

All is quiet here at present, but prices are high of all food stuffs and in fact, of everything and the poor are feeling the pinch. A very good, and influential Manchu named Kue'an Hyang, was shot during the first Revolution, and the Civil Governor is being asked by the Minister of the Interior, for the reason why, but as he was not here then, all he can say is, that he will make inquiries and report later.

The making of the new road from the railway station to the Lake is progressing, and there is some talk of making a road to the main island on the lake, so as to enable the people to reach it without using boat, which has been the only way of getting to it so far. The Civil Governor has been asked if funds are available.

Rumour has it that " wealthy Shanghai merchant (Chinese) has purchased a lot of waste land at Sonemohdzang, at the back of the Pagoda Hill and near the end or rather the beginning, of the Gra Canal, and proposes floating a fruit and vegetable growing company, which I am sure would pay well.
