The Use of Opium

is not so general either as in other parts of the island, though opium can be obtained in nearly every market and village along the route, as I learned from an opium smoking carrier who accompanied our party. In one village of 10,000 inhabitants I was told that in the older generation (men of from fifty to seventy) there were many opium. smokers among the wealthy, but that among men in their prime, only chair coolies and carriers are addicted to the use; one hears of an occasional case of the discontinuance of the habit with the aid of anti-opium pills.
