The New Year in Hongkong

Notwithstanding the repeated assertions sining the Ghivese, writes our Hongkong correspondent, ux well from the lips of foreigners, that the past' Chinese year has been an unlortunate one in respect to business, the year closed without any special failures: among the Chinese. It is reported that when the time came to settle up the accounts of the year, as is usually done by the Chinese at its close, mong} was not as plentiful as could be wish Arrangements, however, were contrived and nothing serious occurred, This is certainly satisfactory, as it offers hope that with the coming' year, as there have been oe failures, there will be an improvement in the business world, and as the interests of Europea firm are closely bound up in the prosperity of the native firms, all parties are looking forward to a better state of thingy.
