The fourth race of the season took place on Saturday, starting at Prince's Pier, Woosung.
The yachts sailed down in the morning under charge of the Iaodahs, the owners going to Woosung by the 1.20 train, except the owner of Violet, who arrived ct the station just in time to see the train moving off and in spite of his frantic gesticulations, et cotoro, the train did not stop, and consequently the Violet missed chance of a win as the day was one to suit her.
Prospects in the morning pointed to hot quiet sail with very little wind and it was therefore a pleasant surprise to find on arrival at Woosung Forts Station that the river was showing a plentiful supply of white horses. It was apparent that the journey round the Woosung spit buoy was impracticable for the smaller yachts, ani the Committee therefore decided to start class Band the Swallows from the: pier straight back to Shanghai, ["B" Crass aNp Swatzows The starters were: Class B Madcap, Red Tape, and Wee Wynn; Swallows, Dogfish, and Atlantic.
The course for Css B and Swallows was to have been the same as that for But when the train conveying the y chtsmen arrived ut Woosung Forts, it was found that a atiff breeze was blowing from the East, making such a choppy sex on the bar that the Committee decided to alter the aight, hone from Prince's Pier vid the Junk Channel. As it turned out, this was a most wise decision. Th boats were star tell off at 2.15. 1) starting gun was inaudible to the outside boats owing to the strong wind, and a flag would have boon a more satisfactory signal. The order at the start was Dogfish, Madcap, Atlantic, Wee Wynn, Red first four being on the Shang-sides. At Pheasant Point Dogfish and Madcap were atill leading and Red Tape ing up, when Dogfish, which had been over atadangerous angle several addenly capsized and turned ove: The skipper birdly wet before they were rescued. Considering the choppy sea and strong breezs the neatness wich which this fect was performed isn credit to the Yacht Club; it isn great pity chat Madcsp, with the lead which she had, should have been obliged to forfeit this advantage in order to assist a boat in another The other boats stood by as they came up to see li thole services were required, and cooting with the race, Ted Taps picked up a hat or so subsequently
sufficiently proved the superiority class over that of the allows strony breeze and rough water by cate upond walking aw y from Atlantic a finishing & quarter of an hour alead of her.
The elapsed times were Red Tape, hrs 31' 16"
Atlntic, 2 46 10 Wee Wynn,2 56 40 is, however, declared "no race" on Vaccount of the accident, was still ranning strong, but with a fair breeze to help them the yachts wore travelling much too fast to be stopped by it, although towards the finish where it was a close reach, progress seemed very show to those who were in a hurry to got across the line.

By the condition of the competition the winner of the cup for the season is the one which aggregates the least time for three races. It is somewhat to be regretted that this race was all running and reaching as it resulted in a tame race and the qualities called for under these conditions are not considered a general test of merit, The other two races will, it is hoped, be more satisfactory in ti t. One thing certain, however, is that whatever the course or weather Kid will take a, lot of beating.: sat
