Owing to the scarcity of rice an order was issued by the Governor of Honan several months ago prohibiting the export of the grain, Last month a rice-dealer was arrested by the Magistrate of Hoianghsianghsien for having disobeyed the order. In response to the clamour of a turbulent mob the dealer wax cangued. Some|? days later the mob asked the Magistrate to put the merchant to death. This was refused. Thereupon the mob demolished the Yawen, wounding several runners. The matyer has beea since referred to the Governor.
