The Water Polo Match

SHANGHAI BORN v. SHANGHAI ROWING

cLuB.

The concluding event was a water polo match between the above teams, which played as advertised with the exception of W. 0. Lancaster. who was replaced by G. A. Robinson. MacCabe won the toss from Fowl-r and chose the deep end for the first half. "The play daring the opening half was extremely even, and was marked by almost an entire absence of fouls'; so that it occnpie' little more than the regelation seven minutes. Even the swimmers themselves seemed astonished when the whistle was blown for half time. No goals had then been scored.

In the second half Fowler and G. Mayne attempted several shots at the Clab's goal, but failed to score. After " few minutes' play C. W. O. Mayne got the ball into the net from about half-way. It was nearly time when the Club equalized with back flip from MacCabe. 'The game being a tie, the respective captains arranged for another two minutes' play each way. In the first period, Hutchison, was very much done up, and was unable to keep pace with P, Lancaster, who took the ball right up to the Club goal and put. it through. When the teams changed ends for the third time the Shanghai boys had a lead of one point, and a8 00 further score was made, the match was theirs by two goals to one, Taking the play all round, it can hardly be said to have been very brilliant though the almost complete absence from fouls was' very gratifying. It should, however, be remembered that almost all the players had already competed—some of them in nearly every event: -and the finishes were very exhausting. The goal keeping was excellent. Both Harris and Rutherford did some excellent "saves," which evoked loud applause. The Shanghai boys were much the faster team, and on all but one occasion secured the ball from the throw in. Mr. Bidwell made an excellent referee, and fally upheld the position, The prizes were distributed in the salle @armes by Sir Pelham Warren, Mr. Hide, as Captain of the Ulub, presided, and welcomed the guests. He thanked all who had seted as officials or who had subscribed to the Prize fond, and expressed the Club's apprecia of Sir Pelham Warren's presence.

Sir Pelham Warren said that it gave him great pleasure to distribute the prizes again; and he made the room re sound with cheers when he called for three hearty ones for the Shanghai Boys, who are hard to beat." Cheers were also ven by and for the International conclusion of the prize more cheers were given for Sir Pelham Warren.

In the evening a number of officials dined together at the Restaurant Auguste, where the Club Committee was represented by Mesers. Lucas and Floeck. The healths of Messrs. Mac-

Cape and Marti were enthusiastically honoured, red, and the fe and to the toast, emphasized the the Bath Committee had received from Messrs. Fowler, H. Robinson, G. A. F. Bidwell, and the Mayne brothers, who had practically lived down at the bath for the five days preceding the Gala.
