The Tibetan Uprising

The Chinese officials are having some lively experiences with the Tibetan uprising in the north-west of the Province.

A lot of soldiers were sent from Batang in Szechuan to hold Atentze, which lies between the upper Yangtze and the Mekong. The Tibetans surrounded the place. If the Chinese at first had taken the offensive they would probably have won. Instead of that they tried hard to feather their nests by getting bribes and money from the enemy. This suited the Tibetans and they readily paid up know. ing they would got all back again. The upshot was that Atentze was captured snd the Imperial troops annihilated. A few days south of this at Tsekou is a Catholic Mission station, in charge of two French Priests. The priests had incurred the enmity of the lamas by opening a kind of rival pawnshop, Yet another trouble, this time with the so-called Mantze near Chiaochia in the Prefecture of Tungchuan, Several battles and skirmishes have taken place in which the Chinese have not shone brightly." A now Brigadier-General has deen appointed to Chaotung which is seven days from the scone of the troubles, 'This General has fall powers to deal with the matter, and it was generally reported that the Emperor had given orders to annihilate' the "Mentze." Those who know anything about these brave "No-ssu" tribes smiled at the annihilation order. With the example of Atentze before them the officials might well wonder as to where the annihilation' was to take place. Seeing also that the so-called rebel chief is only fighting to Fogain ands unjustly confiscated by unscrupulous mandarins one may well hope that there will be justice and no annihilation. General Ssu in a long interview said that ho hoped a way out of the difficulty would be found and though, he ssid, as 8 military mandarin he depended on such troubles as these to obtain promotion, yet he was willing to make peace if a proper way were found. Very -rarely.has such an. enlightened General been seen in Chaotung,
