to have the leaflets printed locally by the "disciples" of the prophet T'ang Huan-chang. I have in hand one of these leaflets printed in Ch'ingyuanhsien. Though the predictions have occasioned a good deal of talk I have not observed any special uneasiness among the people. Unfortunately, many people believe that the church has some connexion with the spreading of this circular, an impression which we, of course, are doing our utmost to correct. The concurrence of the disaster in Japan with the circulation of these leaflets has had not a little to do with the confusion in the minds of the common people.
