Offerings to the Dead

The following is another proof that the people consider that the opium trade has been legalized. In this town there is a very old custom, carried out in the first day of the 10th lunar month, which was yesterday. This, is the day on which paper clothes in. paper boxes are burned and sent into the nether world for the use of the spirits of those who -have died within the-year.. It was noricable yesterday that the boxes contained a full smoker's outfit, namely, a tray on which there was.an opium pipe, a lamp, scissors, a needle for burning the opium and a small piece of opium on a bit of paper. Surely if opium smoking were not legally allowed, the people woud not, have thought it necessary to send the smoking' materials to their dead.—Reuter.
