The French Advance in Alsace

Paris, Dec. 27.

The communique issued this! afternoon states:

From the North Sea to the Lys! a calm prevailed, with intermittent cannonades.

There is nothing to report from the Lys to the Oise.

There have been artillery duels along the Aisne and in Champagne. The enemy, after a violent bombardment, made a counterattack in the region of Porthos, in an attempt to regain the trenches they have lost. The attack was immediately repulsed by our ar tillery and infantry.

We progressed slightly in the Argonne and also near St. Hubert, where one company gained between a hundred and two hundred met We bombarded a ravine where the enemy evacuated several trenche:

Two German attacks against a redoubt at Bois Brule, to the eastward of St, Mihiel, were repulsed.

A dirigible dropped ten bombs between St. Privat and Metz.

German dirigible dropped ten bombs on Nancy, into the middle of the town, without there being any military grounds for doing so. Our aeroplanes, on the contrary, bombarded the aviation sheds at Frescati and one of the stations at Metz, where the movements of trains had been reported, and also the barracks at St. Privat and Mets.

Our troops made further pro-grees in Upper Alsace, on the heights dominating Corny, and repulsed several attacks in this region.

The official communique issued this evening states:

The enemy, after directing a heavy artillery and infant: fire all night against our positions La Bois Selle and.the vicinity, delivered two consecutive attacks, both of which were unsuccessful.

We are consolidating our occupation of the ground won near the trench of Calonne on the heights of the Meuse.
