The Destination Tax

The imposition of, or rather the attempt to impose, the so-called destination tax by the Government Kiangsu has met with serious op-Chinese merchants Meetings have been held at vari Chambers of Commerce to discuss the subject, with the result that this imposition is thought injurious to native trade and prejudicial to the interests of Chinese merchants, as there can be no doubt that foreign merchants will not agree to submit to it while the Chinese Government has no power to enforce obedience from alien subjects. To this effect, a lengthy petition, protesting against this new tax and, failing its total abandonment, praying that the imposition be deferred to a more pro-sporous time, has been sent to the Government by the Nanking Chamber.
