Owing to the death of his mother which occurred on the 3rd instant, His Honour Yii Chao-fan, Taotai of the Ning-Shao-Tai Tntendancy (Ningpo retired into mourning. The Chekiang Governor has appointed Mr. Li Fa-yao to act as Taotai ad interim, Note: Every official is liable to be withdrawn from active service by the death of either of his parents. On the occurrence of such an event he is required by law to retire at once for observance of the mourning rites (ting yn) during " period of nominally three years, in reality twenty-seven months.
