HERBERT SPENCER

To the Editor of the "Nontu Caixa Dairy News interest Mr, brief review of the Life and Work of Herbert Spencer.

Tam not a Sponcerian; but Spencer absorbed so much that is Christian, that asa Christian I cannot but be la sympathy with much that he has made Spencerian, All the more do I regret the tone of @ paragraph, unscientific in its entirely verified generalization, which appeared in your Friday' issue, and]. Dogan: "Elsewhere I have spoken of the natives of Europe as a hundred million pagans masquerading as Chris-tinns." The whole passage seems to me steeped in the most acrid sectarian vinegar.

No doubt good Christians are not 'a majority of us; and the very best is but a poor imitator of Christ, But I have lived too long in the World, East and West, not to feel quite sure that Spencer's doomed "hundred millions" comprise the patriarchal " fifty-eighters" very many times multiplied, who, without the assistance of Spencerian ethics, are leading lives as traly unselfish end could have written such s paragraph.
