Piquant Reminiscence

KING ALFONSO AND EX-KAISER

The "Matin" prints a delightfully characteristic story of the e German Emperor in a further stalment of Notes, made apparently by a former Military Attache at Madrid, of conversations with King Alfonso in 1917, During these cor versations, the Spanish Monarch appears to have handled the Supreme War Lord entirely without gloves.

"When I was 18," King Alfonso is reported to have said, "the Emperor William nominated me as Colonel of one of his regiments. It is the usual thing, and he probably thought it would annoy France. 'A few months later he arrived at Vigo, and I went to salute him on board his ship. On the advice of his own Military Attache I wore ordinary field uniform. On the way to Vigo, while alone in a railway carriage, I practised the customary stiff and very Prussian salutes in order to impress him.
