T have often tried to define to myself what that vocation may be, what is our messiange to the world of to-day, and my attempts at definitions' seem to resolve them= selves to this:—we are living in an age when land after Jand is, pulsing with new life, with a renewed nae tional vitality, when thinking men are seeking for some foundation on which to build up a strong and enduring national life; We have tha secret of what is the only effectual foundation for any civilization, "other foundation can no man lay than jo Inid, which is Christ."
For Chine, the new Ching, this aneseage, mission,—voeation is peculiarly ours whose feet have been tod by ways devious or direct to Eastern Asia, To a degree that no tone else 02 our nations can attempt, we who work here can, and there: fore ought, to beat a pathway, for "the feet of burnished brass," a pathway to the Imperial Throne of Christ, that He may receive the homage of Asin. The greatness, the urgency of that task, its difficulties and therefore the measures that need to be taken, can be known to in & way that those in the Home Lands cannot knew them, for the problems, industrial, social, "futelecto}, moral and' spiritual ure placarded before our eyes, Are we any way disvew: the periovis summons ion, that we continue to give taught and effort, in ake of thie we dwell, for the love of whose we are?
