Figures that have just come to my hand show that California the fifth export state in the Union. Refined petroleum exports continued to lead (the figure: quarter of the year, $21,646,623, ax compared with $24 470,367 for the first three months of the' year. Canned fruits came next with a remarkable total of $4,719,- 593, added to which there was $3,- 657,249 for dried and evaporated fruits. California, by up-to-date and intensely progressive measures, has made her fruits known sal California exported grain barley to the tune of $3.7 million in the! {three monthly" period, million worth of wood' and paper. manufactures, nearly $14 million of Jerude petroleum, over a million dollars worth of canned fish, and getting on for three-quarters of a million dollars worth of eanned milk. For the first nine months of last year the total export trade of the State amounted to $163,164,505. States preceding it were New York, with $551,681,312; Texas, with $395,- 968,740; Pennsylvania, with $219, 868,170; Illinois, with $174,867,678: and New Jersey, with $164,819,616. Its' population is growing rapidly, and with nation-wide publicity now intelligently setting forth the {advantages of life in. thi sunny state there can be no doubt that in nother decade there will be half as many people again to be recorded permanent residents.
There exists in San Francisco an organization which I do not believe its counterpart in any other} part of the world. It is a nonprofit organization, practically its sole business being to advertise the state. Last year it spent something like $400,000 in publicity work, and this year that figure has been increased, as it was found that the previous year's expenditure had been so surprisingly productive of good' to the northern part. of California. The remarkable part of the story, however, is that this Jenorntous amount of money is voluntarily subscribed by public-spirited people. This is the result of what I would call the California spirit. Tt will be.a very long time before we may expect to sec what you on that side might call the "China spirit." Tt is the difference, of course, between optimism and jimism. Over here everyone is loptimisitie and things are booming along, business men generally being
