With God's help and through the general sympathy and kind colla~ oration, we are pleased to say that no ship equipped with wireless has been lost in our seas during the typhoon seasons. Some bad blows experienced by some liners might leven have been avoided if their radio people had been more keen in copying the signals broadest from Shanghai Radio, Only one or two steamers not fitted with radio did not avoid the total wreck, two or three years ago, For the last typhoon season nothing serious happened to any ship or to any land station, although typhoons have been passing as usual not far from our coasts, will add that our seismographs so do their bit in the typhoon struggle. The Rev. Father Gau-their in 1918 bought a very fine Galitzine instrument, The sonsibility and the damping of the seis-mo graph is so great that it-records very clearly the vibration, quite peculiny of the earth's crust caused by any eveline travelling at sea, By means of these photographic registrations we can know, even, without any telegram, that thet cyclonic storm over our seas, cannot know where the centre is, where it is going, but, in the case typhoon having got near the const, if all the cables are put out of order, we will still be able to know that the centre of the storm has not yet struck the coast, This would be very important for inst~ ance in the case of a typhoon very slow, at sea, by the northern trance of the Formosa Strait, 'The speaker then dwelt on typ. hhoons, their origin, their speed and other' physical data and, after expressing again the thankfulness of those at the Observatory to all their numerous friends at sea and ashore, closed by stating that at the pre. sent time Siccawei Observatory taft is staffed by the Rev. Father St. Chevalier, Director; the Rey. Father M. Burgaud, who is in charge of the time signals and transit room; the Rev. Father Gherzi, who is in charge of the weather and seismic departments; and eight Chinese computers, thre of whom have been in the service for more than 30 years, Tue Commissioner of Public Safety hag issued an order forbid-the people, under the threat of severe punishment, to disseminate rumours which are liable to stir up the minds of the people.
