The Revolt in Chengtu

From the Diary of Our Own

Correspondent, The curtain is up on the ra drama to-day. This time rather it is tragedy. Since two o'clock thie afternoon Chao Erh-fog, the Viceroy, and his troops have bad the stage, and what appears to be the climax of months of acting has approached, Under pretext of danger doring the seventh moon feast, to-day being the fifteenth of the Chinese seventh month, the Viceroy yesterday ordered all foreigners hereabout into the city and that all assemble at the Canadian Methodiet Mission compound, near the soldiers' camp in the north-east corner of the city. By noon to-day all were in and the stage was free of impediment, Saddenly under pretext of a fire, some say kindled by his orders, the gates of the city were closed. With equal snd-deoness troops of infantry, cavalry and police swarmed the streets of the city.

Then speedily the news came in, Five or more of the leaders of the railway loagoo bad been summoned to yamen "to see latest wire from Peking." It commanded their arrest, which the guards promptly effected. A mectiog of the directors at the 2 railway offices were surrounded and kept closely guarded. What is tranepiriog there is not yet koo wa, For weeks past three or four vernsoalar papers have been ranaiog apparently at their own wild will so far ae trath and official control is concerned. Before the doors of these, the editors seized and the doors shut and sealed. Meantime @ proclamation fom the Viceroy was being everywhere posted to say that Lob Len a.d others were ander arrest and ordering the tablets and steginge erected by the league to the Emperor be taken down. The pace for this by stroying the profusely ornamental platform erected in centre of the Commercial Mart in the centre of the city and others are following fast.

PIRING OX Mor, Crowds of sympathizers and of the inquisitive made their way into the city slong the Great East Street the pst and the more daring made their way

artery of the city and then down the ide streets to the Viceroy's yamen. A. ory for the release of the leaders arose, and the mob sargod angrily about the Viceregal gate way into the courtyard, A cordon of soldiers exhorted the people to disperse. The only response were more howls for release and " push forward from those behind. "0; Fire" came the Viceroy's order, it said, then ap went the offi and' a volley was disch it. Those in front tarned, but were held and pashed forward from the rear, Then a second volley, this time right into the mass of bomanity and with screams men fell or fied la all directions, There was no longer doubt of the loyalty of the soldiers, or of the dire nature of the work of their gues, Over dozen had fallen, others were wound.
