Canton Monument to Assassin

Annamite Who Threw the Bomb into Hotel Victoria During M. Merlin's Visit The following is the inscription jon the monument which has been erected by the Canton Reds over the grave of the Annamite who attempted to mate M. Merlin, Governor-General of Indo-China Canton on June 19, last year. In~ cidentally the fact of his body having been recovered and buried now for the first time closed, is te say the least curious This is ye of the Peh ynam, His ancestors re scholars, who loved their country dearly, After the French took the people were ill-treated studied industry and when he wa: 20 years old he went to work in a factory. The laws were evil and the treatment of the people was bad. The people of Annam were Jangered and indignant. The martyr therefore established a revolutionary political party and secured the assistance of those who were of the tame mind. When the party was established it was divided into two parties,—one advocating the stirring up of troops in the different districts for the overthrow of the French, the other advocating the aseassinaof bad officials to avenge the people of Annam in order that the rrufferings of the people might be Jdone away with. To stir up the troops was an important step, but the second division, which included the martyr, were of opinion that, if no drastic' action were taken, the enemy would not be afraid, so they Jéccided to put their plans into action, "AE Merlin, the Governor-General Indo-China, was on an official to Japan and was touring Shanghai and Canton, The martyr beard of this and reached Japan first, armed with bombs and pistol He followed M. Merlin every step he went in Japan, Shanghai and Canton, but unfortunately the detectives were so vigilant that he did not have an opportunity to strike. Canton, therefore was the last resort. The martyr knew that the French community were to give a dinner in honour of M. Metlin at the jo Hotel and he said to a friend of the same party 'I don't know whether will succeed or not, but I swear that I will never fall into the hands of the French. "You tell) the world about the aims of our party in order that the world, the French especially, might not misunderstand.

On June 19 at 8 pin, the martyr went directly to the dancing hall of the hotel and there he threw bombs, firing his pistols at the same time. The crowd scattered before him. Men and women were shot, some dead, some wounded and blood was all over the place. Smilingly, the martyr said 'T finished work and I now die,' so he went out and jumped into the river and drowned himself. This action was considered by the Chinese to be [strange so when the martyr's body was recovered it was hidden away and later buried to the southwest of Mong Kiang. This -monoment is -therefore erected. so that "his spirit. might, live and. stand as a igm for fis fellow people."
