Scottish Prisons

Lord Alness, who recently visited Peterhead, gives it as his view that prison life is much more tolerable now than it used to be in the "good cold days." The convicts, he tells us, enjoy the privilege of communal feeding; they have a military dis-governor, if they have any complaint to make; they are placed upon their honour and trusted—some of them ar orderlies—and they rarely abuse the privileges conferred upon them, And as at Peterhead, so at Saughmn. There the inmates have ull the comforts of electric light and central heating, a good library, and from the windows an excellent View of the Corstorphine hill. They have, his Lordship says, almost everything except liberty, And they get even that in time
