During February of this year Kuoh Chien evidently had trouble with one of his subordinates, a man named Liu Fu-tien. As his idea of the easiest way out of the trouble Kuoh invited him to lunch and shot him. General Chen then outlawed Kuoh, whose right-hand man is a certain Major Wei, but the latter was a close friend of Liu Fu-tien and is said to have resented Kuoh's action.
It is alleged that Wei then secretly leagued himself with the Tuchun and promised to open the gates of engsiangfu to the Tuchun's troops. When Chen's troops advanced, however, Wei failed to assist them and with Kuoh presented a solid front against General Chen's forces. The Tuchun thereupon seized Major Wei's father, who was living in his home at Huainghsien. Some members of the families of Wei's subordinates were also seized. Wei was then informed that these people would be executed. unless he surrendered.
