Important Change in Preparation for Completion To-day <Q) Minimum Dislocation of Service

BUND-NANKING ROAD TRAM TRACKS

The greatest credit must be ace corded to the Shanghai Tramway Company and the P. W. D. for the wanner in which the tracks and roadway have been prepared for the changing of the tramway at the junction of Nanking Road and the Bund, Tu the past and recently, the with-China Daily News" has felt it incumbent upon itself to criticize certain works and procedure in con-ith the local tramway service, which criticism, it is felt, thas not fallen on barren' ground but has met with sympathetie-consideration by those to whom it was principally addressed.

For the present, the "Tramway company has apparently put forth its best to accomplish an undertaking of no small magnitude, We refer to the changing of the june~ tion above mentioned.

It will be vealfzed, after thought, that the tracks at' this junction carry, in the course of a day, practi cally the complete tramway service, Bubbling Well cars, Hongkew Park, Circle 6, Yangtszepoo, and those cars proceeding to the French Concession all have to run over this Sunetion and the net work of rails fand points is such that one can readily realize that the moving of ich a' junction is a task of considerable magnitude.

The Weather a Factor For days past, the company has. at night torn up that portion of roadway between the rails and has relaid it with wooden blocks that the heavy day traffic would not be hindered, the reason for this procedure being that the whole conerete bed could not be torn up and the rails placed in the new position in one night. The company therefore has prepared its way, in the course of days and nights, for the moving of the entire junction to-night The forethought in choosing to-night for this undertaking is evident. To-morrow morning necessarily is not a busy period, People do not ave to attend office or Ko shopping, and if the work of changing over exceeds the estimated time through weather or other circumstances, very few will be inconvenienced thereby. If bad weather ensues between now and the end of the week, the company my have to change its plans"but at present it is confidently expected that on Sunday morning, the whole service will be able to negotiate the junction on its new bed occasioned by the Council's road widening scheme, In connection with the time casloned in relaying rails, it will be remembered that at the time of the cutting of the railway Tine by the British military at Jessticlt Park, which action was taken after a British aeroplane was forced tv land on the Kiangwan Race Course and the ensuing action on the part of the Chinexe authorities, the relaying of the rails—merely a matter of 50 yards on a prepared bed—~ took experienced workmen some four hours to accomplish, It will therefore be seen that the changing of a network such as is necessary at the junction of Nanking Road and the Bund is no small under= taking and requires _¢0 with the P. W. D. and oth Assistance all Round In this connection, a representa-five of the "Nort Daily, ews" was. courten July 20 by Mr, A, Owing, manager of the tramway company, that his company received the greatest assistance and ce-operation from the P, W. D., Shanghai Waterworks, Shanghai Gas Company, and others whose services necessarily must take recourse to underground works, No further works of magnitude fare at present anticipated by the tramway company and regarding the North Szechuen Road work, our representative wax informed "that two or three weeks more will see the whole work completed. In this matter, it was also pointed on that close cooperation was necessary with other bodies to ensure that no further road excavations would be rd necessary and that the nature of the wor be carried out in small stretehen, The decision to operate in thi necessitated that iL manner was taken after conferences with the PW, D. and others who fad, a right' to express their opinion, they are willing to put it on view in the show-room and give a full demonstration to any visitor. Should the latter wish to make a purchase, the Department will oh tain quotations and do all that is necessary, but it is the retailer who makes ail'the profit, the Department being content with the gain of another customer for "Juice." They also have available a staff of cyclist mechanics who, on receipt of a telephone message, will ride off immediately to make adjustments or repairs. Also they have engaged cook demonstrators, who, if required, will coach a customer's own cook in the use of an electric stove and even will stay in his kitchen for a day or so in order to finish his education.

The collection office has somewhat the appearance of a small bank. In the centre of a large room isa handsome circular counter and rill, behind which is accommodation for 24 shroffs and some half-dozen controlling officials, with sections. reserved for foreigners and Phe walis and floor are all may or tiled, s0 that the place can easily cleaned, From now on no more accounts will be collected at the old Nanking Road office or the general office in Foochow Rodd, but all will be made either at Sass House, at 60 Avenue Road, o at Seward Road.
