Wong's decision was not sustained. +The squirrel arrived and our servant having duly inspected the creature to see there was no foolery about it, announced:
"Before time hab talked my mouse. This no belong mouse, belong sqewlil, Mus' wantchee new house.
We might say here that there is nothing cheap about Wong when it comes to spending our money, and in the fullness of time George's new home arrived, planned—and built on an elaborate scale—Front entrance hall, large living room on the ground floor, bedroom above with a flight of stairs leading un to it. Questions of ventilation were dealt with on excellent lines, the whole of the front being open and all surmounted with " sloping roof of the most approved design.
But George is no gentleman. He had rot been accustomed to the elegance which Wong had planned for him, and promptly made up Il, used the drawing room as a general romping into a dining room. greatly distressed Wong who literally spent days putting George's bed back in the apartment originally designed for it, Eventually George won.
The Rivals Simultaneously there comimencot between Wong and ourself a battle for George's affection. Wong was able to spend more time with the new acquisition, while we had to rely on the conveyance of titbits dear to the heart of a healthy mindced squirrel to offset Wong's initial advantage.
We discovered that George occasionally liked a walnut as a special treat. Wong countered by informing us that "Jus' now, compladoah no hab got."
Later a naturalist friend of ours told us that a little piece of sugar would be the best lure to secure George's affections. And often in the night, when Wong was elsewhere, we would steal out on to the verandah and give George half a lump which he would chisel through with his incisors in a manner indicative of the keenest enjoyment.
Wong found us out, and now it fs soft sugar we get with our tea. Meanwhile we are reduced to ordering cups of tha beverage which cheers in public places of entertainment simply for the purpose of taking the lump home to George.
Except for the fact that Wong cannot stop us buying cups of tea hho would probably menace the corpradore into running short of lump sugar to the discomfiture of many a housewife and to that extent we fare a little ahead on the game, but only just recently we sustained a reverse which has seriously damaged our morale.
