CHEFOO STIRRED

Public Demonstrations; Cries of Anti-Foreign Menace A correspondent writing from Chefoo on June 8 says: I will Just mention that the situation is not so pleasant. The Chinese are demonstrating. They are marching through the streets by hundreds, carrying banners and shouting: "Kill the foreigner," ete. So far no damage has been done to foreign property but no one knows what the situation will be to- morrow. I did my work all day among some Chinese firms and did some fairly good business, I called on a few foreign firms but had very few results, They seem to be worried about the present disturbance and it is indeed difficult to talk business to men when their attention is attracted by shouting mobs in the street. There has been no vio-Jence to foreigners as yet but the police told me to go inside when mob of ruffians passed by. I think that patrols may be sent ashore from the American men-of war to-night and if #0 perhaps the day will be quiet.
