The Sweeping Bare of Belgium

Apropos of the report that brass door plates and carriage handles are being cut off in Belgium to make cartridges for Germany—s story which fits in curiously with the account of Government perquisition in Germany of copper utensils—great indignation is felt in America at the report, through Rotterdam, that the' German Government has decided to levy on Belgium a war tax of Frs, 85,000,000 per month in addition to the fines imposed upon individual cities. "It will be greatly to the advantage of the German Government," says one correspondent," if some re sponsible official will take mediate steps to contradict a statech is doing more here to Govrenment—than her incident of the—present war.

Not onl in the ited States is such conduct helping to alienate feeling from Gesmany. the South American countries popers ave printing criticism just as caustic as auf appearing in New York, charging the German Government with "unexampled rapacity and inhumanity which no depletion of the German war chest, either actual or contemplated, can jus tify." Yet South America was once more strongly under German than any country outside Europe.
