Peking, Apr. 29.
Fighting broke out yesterday morning between Machang (on the Grand Canal and the Tientsin-Pukou Railway, 79 kilometres southwest of Tientsin), where the Chihli troops are reported to have repulsed the enemy.
Gun-fire is audible now between Changhsintien (on the Peking-Paotingfu Railway, southwest of Peking) and Fengtai (a station just outside Peking. It is reported that hostilities began at 2 a.m. and are continuing along the whole front, with particular fierceness at Changhua.
The operations near Peking would suggest that General Wu Pei-fu is endeavouring to turn the right flank of the Fengtien troops. The Christian General is in command of this branch of General Wu's forces.
