The Levee at Holyrood

For the first time women were admitted to the levee over which the Duke of Sutherland was to preside as High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland at Holyrood on May At a recent meeting of Edinburgh Parish Council a letter was iread from the Lord Chamberlain, from whom a ruling was sought, stating that, while he was of opinion that in no circumstances could ladies be received in their individual capacity, there was no objection to their attendance as part of a body attending in its corporate capacity.

The parish council then decided to send five representatives, including two women, to the levee.
