Ichang, May 31.
The new Union Jack Club for the use of the men from the British gunboats was ~pened yesterday by Rear-Admiral C. McLachlan, c.8., Senior Officer on the Yangtze.
Subscriptions for building the Club were started two or three years ago. Ground was secured adjoining the British Consulate, and construction was begun about six months ago. A general invitation to the opening was sent to all foreign residents in the port, and there was a large turn out on the occasion.
The Club is a very beautiful building, and reflects great credit on those who organized the fund. The British Consul, Mr. Smith, who recently left the port on furlough, being relieved by Mr. Affleck, from Newchwang, was a hearty supporter of the scheme and gave much time and thought to furthering it. He presented some handsome furniture to the Club when leaving.—Reuter.
